Game Idea Research

Game Idea Research

Hi again! After brainstorming a few ideas for my game, I have decided I'm going to stick to an adventure style. As I've said before in previous blog posts, I gained a lot of inspiration from the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro series.

The user of the game will be able to walk around a virtual world. They can collect gems which will add to their score. There will also be different type of keys hidden around the world. Each key will unlock another part of the world to explore. Once the player unlocks an area, they will have to fight small creatures that are walking around.

As the players score increases, their strength will increase. This allows the player to fight tougher opponents as the game goes on. The player's health will take a toll if hit by a creature they are fighting.

The aim of the game is to beat the creatures and collect all the keys to unlock the entire world.

I hope to learn enough skills from the Unity tutorials to make a simplified version of the image above. I had a brief look at some more intermediate unity tutorials to gain some insight in what I could possibly do.

  1. Hi Lauren, I love reading your blog!

I love your idea because as a child I use to love playing games similar to the one you want to make.

I like how you are making a Virtual World, I dont know why but personally I think they make the best games and are more fun to play!

Would you consider maybe having a life expectancy- what I mean by that is when a creature hits you a certain amount of time it would kill you or would your game have unlimited lives? I just think people would be more addicted to your game if you had to wait for the characters life to build back up before you play again!

I would also suggest changing the layout so it does not look similar to the games you mentioned in your blog above.

Okay I will leave it there. Looking forward to playing your game when it is finished! :)

  2. Hi Lauren I loved reading through your blog and your game idea!
This sounds like such a cool idea, I used to love Spyro when I was younger and this game concept sounds so cool. The fact that a key unlocks a new part of the world in the game is so cool. I hope it all goes well. Looking forward to seeing the final product :D

  3. Hi Lauren
I really like idea for this game. Making a game like Crash Bandicoot and Sypro is a food idea and sounds fun. I like the idea that you must find keys around the world to get to the next level. This makes the game more challenging. I also like the idea of having the score effect the player’s strength.
I was wondering will the creatures you fight get harder depending on how much strength you have or what part of the world you are at. Would you consider putting different types creatures to fight like an ice creature or fire creature. How many keys will you have to find?
I think you should add some platforming like games like Crash Bandicoot. You could also add health pick ups so you can heal you character or your character heals over time.
Overall, I like this idea it’s a fun idea.

  4. Well a good day to you Lauren.

After a thorough read through your well written and displayed blog, I must say that I really do find your Game Concept very interesting indeed. To me personally it is very simple and that is a very enjoyable concept for a game like this that is inspired to the likes of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon (which I do have a very fond nostalgia for myself). I do love adventure games from the likes of the world and the unique ways that they give some ideas like I think that your idea of your strength increasing as your game score does is very interesting indeed. All in all, I am very interested to see how your game concept turns out and no matter how it turns out in the end, it will be great no matter what.

    Cheerio!!

  5. Hey Lauren,
I was just here to read your blog. From reading it I really like your idea. As a kid I used to love to play the spyro games on my playstation 2. If i'm honest i wasn't really a fan of crash bandicoot, yes i know i'm an uncultured swine :'). I like your games idea because I like the idea that the player can walk around on a virtual world collecting gems and getting keys to unlock more of the world. I just have a few questions to do with the game. Will the time of day change, like will there be day time or night time? if so will there be more creators at night time or even will they be harder at different times of the days? And lastly by collecting the gems would you consider being able to change the characters outfit in some type of shop. Thanks anyway for giving me a chance to read this blog, I enjoyed reading it.

  6. Hi Lauren,

First of all. I love your game idea. I'm a big fan of platformer / adventure style games as well, so this sound right down my alley.

Do you know how many game areas you are going to create for the game, and how many keys you will have to collect?

I like the idea of getting stronger as your score increases. Could you implement a penalty system, so that if the player loses all of their health and has to restart the game from a certain point, they lose some of their score - and strength along with it?

Be sure to check out the Unity Asset Store. There are a lot of free assets there that will really save you time, and there are loads of different art styles such as low poly that might suit your game.

Looking forward to seeing how your game turns out!

  7. Hi Lauren,

I really like your game idea. I used to play Minecraft as a kid and it was also one of my researched games. I find the adventure style games very fun to play. It's cool that you've added an 'achievements' system where the player can unlock parts of the world, as it encourages them to keep playing.

I look forward to reading more!

  8. Hey Lauren,

An adventure type game could be very cool and fun to play, Spyro was one of my favourite game to play as a kid so if your game is inspired by that then I'm sure I and many others will really in enjoy it. I think the idea to have your player get tougher as they go along is very clever and will only make the game more fun to play. Cant wait to see it finished.

  9. Hi Lauren,

I haven't played any adventure games before but I have always appreciated them. Crash Bandicoot, Banzo and Kazooie and even Conker's Bad Fur Day, all great games. Your game concept is very simplistic and very solid overall. If you develop some graphic and map design and begin doing some concept arts, you can flush out the aesthetic side of your adventure game.

I have a few suggestions to make. You said that the enemies' strength will increase as your score increases. I think that can be rather unfair to the player of they lack any variety in weapons or abilities to take out the monsters as they progress through the levels. If players have various weapons and abilities to deal with enemies that have different weaknesses and methods to take down. It can give more depth to the combat aspect of the game.

That all I can think of right now.
Good luck on developing your game,

    Have a nice day!

  11. Hello Lauren, just gone and read through your game idea research and I find your idea rather intriguing. I myself love Spyro and Crash Bandicoot as games and think they are well done and brilliant. The game idea you have presented with the keys is quite unusualy but sounds good, I do like the idea of how creatures work in the game world though. I hope your game plan goes well.

Introduction

Introduction to Me My name is Lauren Murphy and I am 20 years old. I live in Castleknock and have 4 people in my family including myself.  My favourite class last semester was Design Process and Practice. I have a big interest in graphic design and I really enjoyed learning about the principles and rules of design. My goals for this module are to improve my blog writing skills and successfully create a video game. Image 1: Boracay Beach During Summer I went on holiday to The Philippines. I travelled for 22 hours to Manila, where I stayed for 4 days. I then flew to Boracay and Cebu. Each place was amazing and different in their own way. I met a lot of people who were travelling alone around Asia. After listening to some people's experiences, I have decided I will definitely go back to Asia next summer. I also went to Hungary this Summer. Some of my friends were interrailing around Europe so I met them in Budapest for 4 days. I went to the famous Baths and also went on

Game Brainstorm

Game Brainstorm Game 1:  My first game idea is to create an adventure game. As I said before, in blog about my favourite video game, Crash Bandicoot was my number one. A game similar to this would be ideal. There would be one character travelling through worlds, collecting objects and fighting villains. Other games similar to this are Ratchet And Clank and Spyro. I like the idea of the player having their own character and being free to travel around the world they're in. After watching some Unity tutorials, I have gathered knowledge on how to create the basis of these games. I have a lot more to learn, but I am looking forward to broadening my skills. Image 1: Crash Bandicoot  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7G91RjVmvk Game 2:  The second type of game idea I came up with is a racing video game. I've taken inspiration from the playstation game "Micro Machines" and Nintendo game "Mario Kart". The game would have both multiplayer and solo options
