Reading 6

Hi and welcome back to my blog! This week I will be focusing on writing the body paragraphs for my chapters.

After researching game layout and game design it has become apparent that there are clear steps involved to create these things. I plan to separate each steps into their own paragraphs. Some steps will probably have a few paragraphs due to the amount of content I need to explain. I will also have an introductory paragraph at the beginning and a concluding paragraph at the end.

  • My introductory paragraph will include my thesis and an introduction to my research.
  • The following paragraphs will include the evidence to support my thesis. These paragraphs will include a topic sentence which will restate my thesis followed by evidence to back it up. The evidence will include examples and factual information. A closing sentence will wrap up and end each paragraph.
  • The last paragraph will conclude my research.

Just to recap on each steps for game layout I have come across;

  1. Brainstorming
  2. Drawing/Drafts
  3. Commitment (I might leave this one out)
  4. Initial Construction
  5. Function
  6. Detail Work (This links in with the game design steps)
  7. Test
  8. Fix

Recap on each steps for game design;

  1. Large-Scale features for game
  2. Environmental conditions
  3. Specify active regions e.g collection coin
  4. Specify non-static regions e.g door opening
  5. Specify entrance/exit
  6. Aesthetic details
All of these steps give me a rough guideline of what I need to write per paragraph.

Introduction

Introduction to Me My name is Lauren Murphy and I am 20 years old. I live in Castleknock and have 4 people in my family including myself.  My favourite class last semester was Design Process and Practice. I have a big interest in graphic design and I really enjoyed learning about the principles and rules of design. My goals for this module are to improve my blog writing skills and successfully create a video game. Image 1: Boracay Beach During Summer I went on holiday to The Philippines. I travelled for 22 hours to Manila, where I stayed for 4 days. I then flew to Boracay and Cebu. Each place was amazing and different in their own way. I met a lot of people who were travelling alone around Asia. After listening to some people's experiences, I have decided I will definitely go back to Asia next summer. I also went to Hungary this Summer. Some of my friends were interrailing around Europe so I met them in Budapest for 4 days. I went to the famous Baths and also wen...

Game Idea Research

Game Idea Research Hi again! After brainstorming a few ideas for my game, I have decided I'm going to stick to an adventure style. As I've said before in previous blog posts, I gained a lot of inspiration from the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro series. The user of the game will be able to walk around a virtual world. They can collect gems which will add to their score. There will also be different type of keys hidden around the world. Each key will unlock another part of the world to explore. Once the player unlocks an area, they will have to fight small creatures that are walking around. As the players score increases, their strength will increase. This allows the player to fight tougher opponents as the game goes on. The player's health will take a toll if hit by a creature they are fighting. The aim of the game is to beat the creatures and collect all the keys to unlock the entire world.  Image 1:   Minecraft Virtual World I hope to learn enough...

Game Elements

Game Elements This week's readings game me an insight on the questions that must be asked when thinking about; p layers, objectives, rules, resources, game state, information, sequencing, player interaction, theme and games as systems. I found the examples given for each of these very useful and gave me an idea of all the variations there are. Image 1:  https://pxhere.com/en/photo/948574 I think the "Three step process" given for critically analyzing a game will definitely come in hand: "1. Describe the game’s formal elements. Do not interpret at this point, simply state what is there. 2. Describe the results of the formal elements when put in motion. How do the different elements interact? What is the play of the game like? Is it effective? 3. Try to understand why the designer chose those elements and not others. Why this particular player structure, and why that set of resources? What would have happened if the designer had chosen differently?" ( h...
